Historic homes nestled between downtown and the lake
Nestled between the hustle and bustle of downtown Austin and the sparkling shores of Lake Austin, Tarrytown and Old Enfield offer a glimpse into Austin’s past. Traditional bungalows, stately manors, and historically significant estates line the streets where locals are frequently seen enjoying evening strolls beneath a canopy of mature oak trees. This highly desirable neighborhood has seen the construction of several new homes and extensive renovations of the older, creating a wonderful mixture of Austin‘s past and present.
Tarrytown was originally a 365-acre estate before it was subdivided in the early 1900s. The Enfield Realty and Home Building Company designed and built much of the neighborhood, which several of the city’s most notable residents have called home. Today, this peaceful enclave enjoys close proximity to downtown, close proximity to a conveniently located freeway, and beautiful parks.
Life in Tarrytown and Old Enfield is one of peace, serenity, and higher standards. Children attend highly rated schools, other parts of town are easily accessible thanks to a close-by freeway, and exciting nights spent downtown are a stone's throw away. During the warmer months of the year, weekends spent boating on Lake Austin are frequently looked forward to by locals of all ages. At the end of a busy day, residents retreat back to quiet residential enclaves and their peaceful, tree-lined paradise.
World-famous Sixth Street might be nicknamed “dirty Sixth,” but the western half of this iconic thoroughfare offers a bit more sophistication. Cozy brasseries, freshly shucked oysters, and refined pub favorites can all be found near Six Street‘s western half.
A favorite way to spend warm, sunny days is on the patio of Clark’s Oyster Bar. Situated on West Sixth, Clark’s has been a neighborhood favorite for several years. Fresh oysters, lobster rolls, crabcakes, and other nautical delights grace the pages of their menu. In particular, their weekend brunch and very reasonable happy hour are favorites among both new and longtime Austinites.
In neighboring Clarksville, Jeffrey’s is one of Austin’s finest steakhouses featuring dry-aged beef, French classics, and a full bar. Food is served in a romantic dining room with white-glove service and fine art prominently displayed for all to enjoy. In addition to their excellent steaks, Jeffrey’s is known for their truffle-deviled eggs, king crab avocado toast, and baked Alaska, one of the tastiest desserts in West Austin.
Creole delights from one state over can be enjoyed at Shoal Creek Saloon. Austin’s local gathering spot for New Orleans Saints games does Cajan food very well, with locals coming back time and time again for pork chops, gumbo, and po boys. Austinites look forward to Shoal Creek Saloon’s crawfish boils, an annual indication of springtime’s arrival.
Another casual spot for more native cuisine in the neighborhood can be found at Littlefield’s Tacos + Coffee. Littlefield’s features two of Austin’s iconic breakfast institutions under one roof. Medici Roasters’ caffeinated favorites and Veracruz All-Natural’s tacos are enjoyed out on a large, shady patio next to an open green space for children to run around.
The Pease Mansion on Niles Road is the former home to two governors and has recently undergone a lengthy restoration. Though privately owned, The Pease Mansion is worth admiring from the street on an evening walk. Nearby, Pease District Park is one of Austin’s more popular parks frequented by UT students and nearby residents, stretching across over 40 acres. Disc golf, sport courts, jogging trails, playground space, and splash pads attract visitors of all ages, with no other amenity nearly as popular as the new Kingsbury Commons and its modern treehouse. At Pease Park on the last Saturday of April, Eeyore's Birthday Party is a longstanding Austin tradition celebrating all things weird and wonderful. Since 1963, the festival has been a lively fundraiser for local non-profit organizations looked forward to by all for its quirky individualism.
